A new environmental study ranks Canada as one of the worst developed countries in the world. The study has been done by the Conference Board of Canada, an independent and not-for-profit applied research organization in Canada.

According to the study Canada performed poorly and received D grades in the areas of waste generation, water usage, and greenhouse gas emissions. But the study still gave Canada an overall C grade because the country performed “better than average on other measures of environmental performance”. The study notes that “Canada is not taking the necessary steps toward environmental sustainability”, and that Canada “stands almost at the bottom of the pack” alongside with USA and Australia.

Joseph Romm, from the Climate Progress blog, writes on Huffington Post that John McCain won’t regulate greenhouse gas emissions if he and Sarah Palin get elected.

Romm writes that McCain does not support mandatory government control of greenhouse gases, something he supported before running for President. Romm also points out the fact that McCain picked a climate change denier as his running mate, that McCain failed to mention climate change in his acceptance speech and that McCain’s chief economic adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin recently said that “McCain does not agree with the Supreme Court decision that labels carbon dioxide a pollutant and requiring EPA to regulate it.”

Billions of us have seen the performances of the marvellous athletes at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The top 15 countries in terms of 5 or more Gold medals were the host nation China (#1, 51 Gold medals), the US (#2, 36), Russia (#3, 23), the UK (#4; 19; the next Olympic host nation), Germany (#5, 16), Australia (#6, 14), South Korea (#7, 13), Japan (#8, 9), Italy (#9, 8), France (#10, 7), Ukraine (#11, 7), the Netherlands (#12, 7), Jamaica (#13, 6), Spain (#14, 5) and Kenya (#15, 5).

However we must ask the question: how GREEN were the efforts of the successful Gold Medal-winning countries?

South Africa’s Climate Change Plan Includes Carbon Tax

Published by Simon Leufstedt on August 11th, 2008 in Business & Politics.

Photo shows Adderley Street, Cape TownLast week South Africa’s government unveiled an “ambitious” climate change plan that includes rigorous energy efficiency measures and a carbon tax on CO2 polluting industries.

“The world faces a global climate emergency. It is now clear that only action by both developed and developing countries can prevent the climate crisis from deepening,” environment minister Martinus Van Schalkwyk said in a statement.

In 2003 South Africa emitted 446 million tonnes of greenhouse gases “and forecasts growth to a maximum of 550 million tonnes a year by 2025.”

South Africa wants the greenhouse gas emissions to stop growing “at the latest by 2020 to 2025, stabilise for up to 10 years, and then decline in absolute terms.” Van Schalkwyk said that “the aim is to limit global temperature increases to two degrees above pre-industrial levels.”

Junk Mail Produces as Much CO2 as 9 Million Cars

Published by Simon Leufstedt on August 11th, 2008 in Business & Politics.

Junk Mail Delivered!A newly released report by ForestEthics says that the junk mail in USA alone contributes to global warming as much as seven US states combined, or more than nine million cars, or the emissions generated by heating nearly 13 million homes for the winter.

Along with the junk mail report the ForestEthics group stressed the importance of their campaign and petition for a Do Not Mail Registry “to give Americans the choice to stop receiving junk mail.”

“This report confirms what Americans instinctively know: the scale of junk mail’s waste goes against all common sense,” says Todd Paglia, Executive Director of ForestEthics. “And the junk mail industry is incapable of policing itself on this matter– we need a Do Not Mail registry to give Americans a choice, and to enforce that choice.”

Obama’s Energy Plan for America: 10% Renewables by 2012, One Million Plug-ins by 2015 and Efficiency Now

Published by Simon Leufstedt on August 6th, 2008 in Energy.

Sen. Barack ObamaThe Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama has released his “New Energy for America” plan. If elected some of the things in his plan are 10% renewables by 2012, one million plug-ins by 2015 and energy efficiency now.

John McCain’s energy plan in comparison is, let’s say, a bit weaker. He is all about nuclear energy, a $300 million battery prize, nothing on energy efficiency and an opposition to clean renewable energy.

Here are some of the energy plans Barack Obama has for America:

White House refuses to open EPA emails on global warming

Published by Simon Leufstedt on June 27th, 2008 in Business & Politics.

The White House has apparently refused to open an email from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with a proposed rule that would limit greenhouse-gas emissions from new vehicles. And what is more surprising (!?) is that they managed to get it their way in the end.

I am not even surprised anymore. That’s why I will let John Stewart do the explaining:

China is now the world’s biggest polluter

Published by Simon Leufstedt on April 29th, 2008 in Business & Politics.
China is now the world's

China is number one, in greenhouse gas emissions that is. A report from the University of California says that Chinas greenhouse gas emissions have been “underestimated” and that the country probably took the number one position from USA in 2006-2007.

According to the research “unchecked future growth will dwarf any emissions cuts made by rich nations under the Kyoto Protocol.”

World food price crisis and global famine from biofuel perversion, climate change and globalization

Published by Dr Gideon Polya on April 4th, 2008 in Biofuels.

The World is facing a global food price crisis and looming mass starvation in the Developing World. The price of rice has doubled in 3 months and the price of wheat has doubled in one year. The huge increases in the price of staples such as wheat and rice is being driven by US, UK and EU diversion of food for biofuel; climate change and decreased agricultural productivity due to both inundation and drought; and globalization which means that 4 billion impoverished and under-fed people compete in the market place for those with the money to buy food to drive their cars or for grain-fed meat.

4% of the world’s emissions come from ships

Published by Simon Leufstedt on February 13th, 2008 in Cars & Transportation.

Did you know that about 90% of the world’s goods are shipped the water way? About one billion ton of CO2 is emitted by ships, every year. The ships energy demands are expected to rise by 75% in about 15-20 years.

Did you also know that 4% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions come from ships? This can be compared to the aviation industry that emits about 2%.

Possibly the most graphic treatment of global warming that has yet been published, Six Degrees is what readers of Al Gore's best-selling An Inconvenient Truth or Ross Gelbspan's Boiling Point will turn to next. Written by the acclaimed author of High Tide, this highly relevant and compelling book uses accessible journalistic prose to distill what environmental scientists portend about the consequences of human pollution for the next hundred years.
