Ulla Jacobsen film “The Plastic Battle” has won Friends of the Earth’s Best One-minute green film award.

The judges, David Sproxton, Dilly Gent and Andrew Macdonald, gave the one minute film praises from “Good concept” to “Brilliant film. Perfect! The best!”

Ulla Jacobsen says that “over-packaging of children’s toys takes on absurb dimensions.” And I can only agree with her.

Today our resources are depleted

Published by Simon Leufstedt on October 6th, 2007 in Business & Politics.

The Earth - Our only homeToday, 6th October, have we as humans consumed as many resources as our earth can produce under a whole year. If we, according to WWF, continue in the same speed as we do today we will need another earth in less than 40 years.

The so called “Overshoot Day” when our earth’s renewable resources are depleted takes place today. That means that during the rest of this year we will need to live on the remaining “capital” as our “interest” (that’s bank language) has come to a dead end.

Google give us mixed feelings

Published by Simon Leufstedt on September 26th, 2007 in Business & Politics.

Google give us mixed feelings

Google is probably one of the most successful Internet companies, ever. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of Google, have transformed the well-known company from an ordinary search engine site to a successful global advertising company. The good thing is that they are turning more and more into a green company.

For example they have plans for a massive solar installation at its campus. They are investing millions of dollar in companies seeking to make plug-in hybrid vehicles a reality. Google are also teaming up with green companies and doing many more things pushing Google to a more sustainable and environment friendly company.

But Google also keep giving us mixed feelings about them. Their motto is “do no evil” but apparently you don’t always need to use it.

The new iMac from Apple

Published by Simon Leufstedt on August 17th, 2007 in Business & Politics.

Apple iMac

Last week Apple released their brand new iMac to the world. Like always its one heck of a design and the computer looks great.

But how green is this new iMac? After a massive campaign where Greenpeace and thousands of Apple users demanded Apple to become greener and the growing global warming threat this is one hot topic these days.

Steve Jobs have said that “recycling has been kept in mind from the ground up” in the making of the new iMac. Steve has also posted a green manifesto where he talks about how green Apple will become.

But what about the new iMac then!? Well, to be honest it’s not much to hang in the tree.

Climate Count Scorecard

Published by Simon Leufstedt on August 8th, 2007 in Business & Politics.

How can you support companies that tries to do little or a lot to help solve the climate crisis? Which companies have a plan to reduce their CO2 emissions? That’s two hard questions. But thankfully ClimateCounts.org has rated over 55 companies that are being used by households in the USA and the UK. These are well known brands across eight consumer sectors, ranging from electronics to apparel.

You can use the Climate Counts Company Scorecard to see how serious companies are about stopping climate change - and how they compare to their sector competitors. The annually updated scorecard reflects the self-reported efforts of companies to address climate change - or avoid it altogether.

Did you know that Amazon hasn’t scored any points yet? That the big company giant Microsoft has a green score of 31 compared to innovative Apple that only has a 2 point score. But Microsoft on the other hand get beaten by Yahoo! Who scores a total of 36 points.

The list goes on and you can find all the scores over at ClimateCounts.org/scorecard.php.
