Today the government in UK unveiled plans to build around 7000 wind turbines off the coast of Britain. According to John Hutton, the Secretary of State for Business, these wind turbines would generate enough electricity for every home in the UK by year 2020.

The new wind farms would not just create 33 gigawatts of clean electricity it would also create jobs and boost the economy by making the UK’s wind industry two times the size of any other countries.

The plans are backed up by the opposition party, Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth. John Sauven, executive director of Greenpeace, said that “Hutton is proposing nothing less than a wind energy revolution, but it won’t become a reality on the back of a speech.

“If we are finally to exploit the massive energy resources we have available on this windy island, there will now need to be a revolution in thinking in Whitehall, where the energy dinosaurs have prevailed for too long.“

He continued by adding that they “need the Government to guarantee premium prices for clean electricity so industry can take risks to get tens of thousands of turbines built and installed out at sea. And Labour needs to drop its obsession with nuclear power, which could only ever reduce emissions by about four per cent.”

If the large offshore wind farms actually become a reality, as it now surely seems they will, UK will meet the EU target of generating 20 per cent of energy by renewable sources by 2020. Something they would otherwise fail with.
