  • To be banal, a black screen background uses less electricity. There is a need for major websites like Google and Yahoo to offer black-screened services. Of course marketing potential and aesthetics would suffer if presented in mostly black.

  • Phillip: Displaying a black background doesn’t always mean you save energy. There are different reports about this. Google has recently said that “displaying black may actually increase energy usage”.

  • On a flat screen monitor, a black screen doesn’t make any difference. As Simon says, eve with a CRT screen it’s not proven, but if it does make a difference then Phillip’s probably right.
